Of the three grand tours (Tour de France, Vuelta a Espana, & Giro d’Italia), none of them have started outside of Europe. This may come to a change in the 2012 Giro, as Washington, D.C., has shown a tremendous interest. Angelo Zomegnan, the Giro’s director, has said a couple weeks ago that thanks to interest from the Capitol, the Giro could very well start in the US. “The course promises to be one of the most spectacular prologues ever used in a Grand Tour. It seems very appropriate that the prologue for the first US start be held in the heart of the nation’s capital,” says Mark Sommers, D.C.’s Capitol Criterium race director.
