One of the most popular cycling races in the United States, Amgen Tour of California, announced this mourning the 2011 host cities.

As usual, the race will last eight days and travel over 800 miles. This is the Amgen Tour of California sixth event and starts May 15th through the 22nd 2011.

Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California will start in Lake Tahoe for the first time. The race will end in Amgen’s hometown of Thousand Oaks.

The complete list of newly cities added to the Tour of California for 2011 are South Lake Tahoe (previously stated), North Lake Tahoe-Northstart at Tahoe Resort, North Lake Tahoe-Squaw Valley USA, Auburn, Livermore, Claremont, and Mt. Baldy.

The Tour of California will still stop in Sacramento, Modesto, San Jose, Seaside, Paso Robles, Solvang, Santa Clarita, and Thousand Oaks.

Missing from last year is Davis, and Santa Rosa.

It would highlight RadioShack’s Lance Armstrong, seven time Tour de France champion and Levi Leipheimer, the three time defending champion.

Messick added, “From Tour de France to Olympic medalists and world champions this field is one of the best that has ever competed on American soil. The growing reputation of the Amgen Tour of California has resulted in a very accomplished field of cyclists, which should make for a great race.”

Sacramento Grand Prix to Open the Tour of California

An agreement was reached between the Sacramento Sports Commission and the Amgen Tour of California to organize a professional criterium style cycling race before the start of Stage 1 of the 2010 Tour. The race is slated to take place on May 16, 2010.

Travelling 1.4 miles, the Sacramento Grand Prix starts at 10am with its course rounding the Capitol Building. It will run a course that duplicates portions that of the Tour. This will be in time before Stage 1 ends in downtown Sacramento.

The Grand Prix will promote the return of women professional racers to the tour and will be joined by the finest female cyclists in the world. In addition, it will demonstrate the best short course in cycling.

Team Fly V Australia looks likely to join the Tour of California this season as its major sponsor, V Australia, is also a major sponsor in America’s biggest cycling race.

Race organiser AEG Sports had previously revealed that two more stages had been addd to this year’s California tour, with the sixth stage being sponsored by V Australia. However, the participation of Team Fly V remains to be confirmed, as its management company Pegasus Racing has declined to give any comments on this matter so far.

Interested observers would have to wait, since the complete team listings aren’t expected to be announced this early, anyway. It is possible that AEG Sports will be disclosing the final list later this month, or perhaps early in March. Officially announced today at 10 am, the 2010 Tour of California host cities are confirmed. In addition, on the social network platform twitter Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had a cross conversation with cyclists Lance Armstrong, George Hincapie, David Zabriskie and Levi Leipheimer, who all confirmed they will take part in the 2010 Tour of California. Here is the schedule:

Stage 1: Sunday, May 16th – Nevada City to Sacramento
Stage 2: Monday, May 17th – Davis to Santa Rosa
Stage 3: Tuesday, May 18th – San Francisco to Santa Cruz
