This was his plan and he will stick by it. With plans to rest for the upcoming weeks, Gilbert prepares for the Vuelta a España and world road race championships.

In good form, Gilbert performed well in the following events: he finished ninth in Milan-San Remo, third in Gent Wevelgem, second at one of the stages of the Three Days of De Panne, third in the Tour of Flanders, fifth in Brabantse Pijl, first in the Amstel Gold, sixth in Fleche Wallonne and fourth in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Gilbert’s next event be on May 26 for the Tour of Belgium.

After winning second place at the Milan-San Remo race, Tom Boonen of Belgium vowed to himself that he will do better on the cobbled classics. His next event will be “A Travers la Flandre” on Wednesday. This was a 200km race which he won third place last year.

This year, Boonen hopes to return on a positive note to compensate for his career which was nearly compromised last year. Although he lost to Spaniard Oscar Freire on Saturday’s 298km epic, Boonen continues to keep himself fit, trim and ready to take top prizes for this season’s events.

Boonen shares his insights on the Milan-San Remo race, “To win Milan-San Remo you need a lot experience because you’ve got to know how to stay cool throughout the race. Tom Boonen of Team Quick Step and Philippe Gilbert of Team Omega Pharma-Lotto will be leading their respective teams in the upcoming Milan-San Remo classic this Saturday, March 20.

Boonen is considered as one of the top favorites in the race, with 4 wins under his belt going into the “sprinter’s classic”, as the event has unofficially come to be known. His latest victory was at the Tirreno-Adriatico event, where he grabbed 1st place in the 2nd stage. The win was also his first in an Italian event.

Boonen hasn’t yet won the Milan-San Remo, with his best finish at 3rd in 2007. That year saw Oscar Freire (Team Rabobank) get the title.
