Andy Schleck of Team Saxo Bank continues to suffer an awful season this year as he suffers yet another setback by having to drop out of the 2010 Volta a Catalunya before the start of the 2nd stage. Neither Schleck or representatives from Team Saxo Bank have given statements regarding the specific reason.

Schleck had joined the opening time trial race for the Volta a Catalunya and finished at 131st, but he was absent from the starting line of the 2nd stage this Tuesday. The Saxo Bank rider had injured his knee when he was hurt in a car accident during training last December 2009, and had to undergo a series of medical treatments while training in the winter. He failed to make an early start for the 2010 season when his knee started acting up again last January this year.

After just finding out that Saxo Bank will withdraw their sponsorship after 2010, the team has taken a step in the right direction as US information technology firm SunGard signs on as a co-sponsor for a year. SunGard is one of the largest privately owned companies in the country, bringing in more than $5 billion annually. The firm, according to their Website, “provides software and processing solutions for financial services, higher education and the public sector. SunGard also provides disaster recovery services, managed IT services, information availability consulting services and business continuity management software.” “This agreement sends a very strong signal, and it could not come at a better time. While most teams are beginning their 2010 season with a focus on winning, team Saxo Bank will have another major goal on the side – finding a new sponsor. The bank announced on Friday that it will terminate its sponsorship of the ProTour team at the end of the 2010 season. Team manager Trey Greenwood says that finding a new sponsor will be “a big challenge,” but the team remains optimistic. The team was surprised about the bank’s withdrawal, no pun intended, but they are happy with getting the news with enough advance notice.
