Mark Cavendish, a cyclist from England, had an amazing 2009 season that saw wins in Milan-Sanremo, three stages of the Giro d’Italia, and six stages at the Tour de France. Because of this, 26 British sports editors have put Cavendish on the top 10 list for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award. The nominees will be voted by the public live on December 13th. Cavendish will have strong competition, however, from Formula One champion Jensen Button, diver Tom Daley, Manchester United player Ryan Giggs, heptathlete Jessica Ennis, triple jumper Phillips Idowu, heavyweight boxer David Haye, England cricket captain Andrew Strauss, tennis player Andy Murray, and, finally, world gymnastics champion Beth Tweddle.
