Damien fitted with his two breakaway riders, Danilo Hondo and Stefan Kruijswijk on stage 17. It was pure luck when his teammate Tristan Valentin got ill and Monier took his place which brought to colorful start of his career.

After the race, the 27 year old Frenchman explained that it is his eighth season with the team Cofidis and is considered to be a veteran. He said, “Probably I turned pro too young, only four years after starting cycling at 17,” and added, “I almost returned to the amateur ranks because I didn’t have the level of professional cycling. I fought for results and only last year I started to get some.” He placed fourth in the 2009 Tour de 1’Ain and was getting offers by other French teams.

The tour will begin in Amsterdam and riders from Lampre, Rabobank and Quick Step are all but ready to take on the challenge.

Heading up the team for Lampre are former Italian champions Gilberto Simoni and Damiano Cunego. Last 2001 and 2003, Simoni won the Giro, while for Cunego, it was in 2004. Adding spice to their group would be Alessandro Petacchi. Since the 2003 edition, he won 26 stages in the Giro.

As for Rabobank, Oscar Freire and Australian Graeme Brown will be on top of its list. Freire won the Milan-San Remo last March, making him the sprinter to beat at the tour.

As for Quick Step, their leading athlete is Dutchman Addy Engels, who would make this his eight appearance at the Tour.

The war between motorists and cyclists does not seem to be calming down any, as 26-year-old Rabobank rider Paul Martens was threatened by a driver while he was riding. The source of the rider’s anger is that he “felt that I held him up often in traffic.” The driver was so upset “that he tried to force me into the ditch on an open field,” Martens said on his personal Website. The driver “jumped out of his car like a fury and threatened to hit me, and said that as soon as I started riding again, he would drive me down! You can imagine my shock, because as a cyclist you are helpless against such people,” he said. Luckily, “an attentive and courageous driver stopped and accompanied me” until the situation was calm.
