Due to a successful break from the peloton, underneath the rain, Petrov rode past all the contenders of stage 11. “I’m very, very happy. I have to thank all my team, they helped me a lot today. Anna, I won!” said Petrov. Celebrating his 32nd birthday on May 25, the Russian was one of the up and coming cyclist ten years ago but somehow his career hadn’t flourished as expected. “This win is very important for Russia, where cycling is picking up again.” Petrov’s last individual pro win was eight years ago in 2002. Katusha seems to be interested in signing on Bjorn Leukemans.

Last Sunday, Leukemans said that a rider from another team approached him with intent of recruiting him. Leukemans did not reveal the identity of the team but Katusha sports director Jef Braeckevelt showed his interest over the 32-year-old athlete. “ top-ten in all of the Flemish Classics and made a big progression. Leukemans is the revelation of the spring,”said Braeckevelt.

Leukemans now has leverage when he re-negotiates with Vacansoleil next week regarding his contract, especially since ProTour squad Katusha team manager Andrei Tchmil asked Braeckevelt to make inquiries about him through his manager.

Hilaire Van der Schueren, manager of Vacansoleil, is quite certain that despite Katusha’s interest, Leukemans will stay with the team. “I think Leukemans will close his career with us. Keeping him on the team is our intention. He also has a contract for next year and there is no release…

The Paris-Roubaix race is on and what you have to watch out for are cyclocross bikes. Robbie McEwen of Katusha has Ridley for a sponsor. Like many other competitors, he will be using a cyclocross bike in the competition. With Ridley’s principle of “Form follows Function”, most of the Katusha’s team rode on Ridley X-Fires on last year’s season. Ridley also sponsors the Telenet-Fidea and Sunweb-Reynor pro cyclo-cross teams. Filippo Pozzato won second to Tom Boonen last year riding the Ridley Damocles road setup.

McEwen came in second to Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Transitions) at the Scheldeprijs race. Although he is in good shape, he said that the Paris-Roubaix is more of a tactical move by the team. “My world ranking gives us good car position in the convoy, about sixth. Without me there, we’d be 21st.”

Cyclocross bikes of different kinds will grace the racing event. Milram team riders will most likely be…

Spaniard Joaquim Rodríguez made the move from Caisse d’Epargne to Katusha in hopes of riding as a team captain, but that plan may be postponed a bit due to a crash during a Katusha training camp. On a training ride today, the second day of the camp, Rodríguez rode into some broken glass which left him with a slashed front tire and deep cuts on his gluteus and thigh. After the crash, he felt dizzy, and was taken to the hospital. “It caused some pretty ugly cuts, one on the gluteus and the other on my thigh. The cuts were deep, with a lot of blood. The cut to the gluteus was so deep you could see the fat. They took me to the hospital, where they gave me 15 stitches and told me to take at least 10 days off the bike,” said Rodríguez. …
