Bike Commuters Gain Support in New York City

Bike Commuters Gain Support in New York City

Cyclists in New York city are getting a new incentive to cycle to work, as a new law has come into effect. The law says that bicycles can be carried in freight elevators for workers in tower blocks, so they don’t have to leave their bike locked up down at the street. Employees can utilize this new law by calling for the implementation of a Bicycle Access Plan, which the company must follow unless they are exempt for certain reasons, such as there not being a freight lift, or safety hazards. This new law is part of the city’s efforts to get more people biking to work. If employees have a convenient way to lock up their bikes and store them, they are more likely to cycle to work. “A lack of secure bike access and parking at the office is one of the biggest deal-breakers for commuters who want to get to work by bike. While commuter cycling continues to grow, this new law unlocks a barrier that has stopped an untold number of bike commutes before they even started,” says Janette Sadik-Khan, New York City’s Transportation Commissioner.[...]

UK Cracking Down on Cyclists Who Listen to MP3 Players

To many a cyclist, riding without an mp3 player is leaving home without your wallet. Music really helps to pass time, not to mention it makes your cycling adventures that much more fun when you’re blasting your favorite tunes and rolling down the road. However, this topic is being brought up in a negative way by the UK’s mainstream press. The Times has said that AA president Edmund King had called for a campaign which warns riders against using mp3 players while riding. The article speaks of “iPod zombies” that have “become the latest menace on Britain’s roads,” saying that listening to music is responsible for a rise in cycling collisions and accidents. It is clearly important to be able to see and hear your surroundings for your safety, but this may be a bit of overkill. Currently, the UK has no law banning the use of mp3 players while cycling, but, if you are caught “riding dangerously,” you can be fined.

Student Biking Drunk Banned from Cycling for 15 Years

Student Biking Drunk Banned Cycling 15 Years

Christoper Felix Hahn, a student at the theater science in Gießen located in Germany was just banned from cycling for 15 years, which also includes riding a skateboard or any other unlicensed vehicle. So you might wonder what this young man did to have such a harsh punishment, well he was caught riding his bike drunk. It is a crime in the United States and throughout the world to ride a bike drunk, but being banned from riding a bike for 15 years is extreme. After leaving a party early in the mourning in June 2008, he was confronted by local police who administered a breathalyzer, and he was three times the legal limit (Hahn’s blood alcohol level was 0.171%, the legal limit in Germany is 0.05%). He then paid a $700 fine, and had to wait for his record to clear before receiving a drivers license, but he thought the ordeal was over.

Christopher received a letter that he must submit a medical and psychological examination, but since he knew he could not receive a drivers license the letter was ignored, plus the steep €500 was a bit out of reach for a student. Due to no action on the letter he received, he was then forbid from using any license free vehicle on the streets, which includes any type of bike. The has to be served for a mandatory of 15 years before lifted. Pretty harsh, it goes to show how strict other parts of the world are. Let us know what you think on this situation with a comment below.
