Ballan was held off in joining any competition due to doping claims. However, the charges were unfounded. The La Gazzetta Dello Sport released a story of an investigation of the Lampre squad, both current and previous members, its team officials and coach Guido Nigrelli were ongoing for doping. Guiseppe Saronni, Maurizio Piovani and Fabrizio Bontempi were also under investigation.

In response to the investigation which was led by Antonino Condorelli, Ballan said, “I have received notification of a request to extend the preliminary investigation by six months. I have put everything in the hands of my lawyer.”

He admitted that his EPO test yielded positive results after he took a micro-dose on the eve of the early morning test. Fret stated that he was into dope without the BMC Racing Team’s knowledge at all. Jim Ochowicz , co –owner of BMC Racing was grateful about Fret’s honest confession, however his contract was duly terminated immediately.

Ochowicz further announced, “The BMC Racing Team will now separate from Thomas Frei but thanks Thomas Frei for his honesty to confess his failure. This brings transparency to the situation and is part of the anti-doping fight the BMC Racing Team is committed to be part of.”

Karsten Kroon of BMC Racing Team bore facial wounds after his crash with Dominik Roels of Team Milram at the Fleche Wallone. The pileup also included Yaroslav Popovych of RadioShack.

They were 75km from the finish line when by the bend, Roels fell bringing down with him several riders. Roels took a hard hit by the rail barrier and seemed to be injured quite seriously. Kroon sat by the side of the road, waiting for the medical team to assist them. He had blood streaming down his face.

Racing team director of BMC John Lelangue described Kroon’s condition, “His face is extremely swollen and his eye is totally closed. We will need a few days for the swelling to go down, then we will see how things will go.”

Cadel Evans of BMC won the Fleche Wallone, beating Joaquin Rodriguez of Katusha and Alberto Contador of Astana.

Evans sped past Contador and Rodriguez in the last 100 meters of the one-day classic. “”I’ve finished second here (in2008). I’ve finished fourth (in 2009) and I think ninth (in 2005). So it feels great to win here, especially wearing the rainbow stripes of world champion.”

With tactical precision, Evans limited his losses on areas where there are steep climbs and forged ahead when the road leveled out. This allowed him to gain momentum among the rest and this brought him first to the finish line. Contador, on the other hand, accelerated too early and continued to maintain his strides but was overtaken by Rodriguez at the 1.3 km climb.
