32-year-old Oscar Pereiro will be part of Astana’s line-up in the Tour Down Under, which will begin next month. At the team’s first training camp in Pisa, Italy, the Spaniard said that he would return early in 2010 after a difficult year. “I raced at the Tour Down Under this year and the number of people watching the race really impressed me. It’s incredible, especially the opening criterium,” Pereiro says. He has yet to race after pulling out of the Tour early due to exhaustion. “The last years few years have been hard for me, I worked really hard to return after the crash at the 2008 Tour. Caisse d’Epargne has signed Ruben Plaza for the 2010 season. The Spanish champion has been tied to the Operacion Puerto doping scandal, but has eventually been cleared by a Spanish judge. Plaza was initially signed to Caisse back in 2007, but they dropped him because several of the race organizers didn’t want Puerto riders at their events. He’s been unable to find a major team, and has been racing in Portugal for the past two years. The 29-year-old is now getting a second chance with Caisse, and is joining Alejandro Valverde, another Puerto cyclist. The 27-man team will be meeting for their first training camp next week in Pamplona.

Two-time defending Tour de France champion looks very confident that his new “revamped” Astana team will be able to support him in winning a third Tour. Even though Lance Armstrong and about a dozen of his ex-teammates gone to team RadioShack, Contador says that he will make the best of what’s “left behind.” “In 2010, we will not have such important names as we did in 2009, but even though we’ve only been together a few days, I am very happy about my teammates.
