As we mentioned yesterday, the 2010 Vuelta a España route has been unveiled today. The 65th Vuelta is a 21-stage race that will begin on August 28th with a 16km team time trial in Seville and will end on September 19th in Madrid. The event will cover 3,352km and will travel across many of Spain’s mountainous regions. The race will also see the 10.1km climb with an 8.4% gradient to the top of Cotobello aux Asturies in northern Spain. This year’s Vuelta was won by Spaniard Alejandro Valverde, followed by Samuel Sanchez and Aussie Cadel Evans. Valverde, Sanchez, and this year’s Tour winner Alberto Contador attended the event today. “It’s a Vuelta that looks exciting but also very, very hard,” says Valverde. “It’s a beautiful Vuelta, for the spectator,” Contador says. Valverde, this year’s Vuelta winner, will be joined by his Caisse d’Epargne teammates Luis Leon Sanchez, Jose Rojas, and team manager Neil Stephens. “There are a lot of riders in this Caisse d’Epargne team who could do well at our race in January. Rojas was impressive here in 2009, winning the Cycle Instead Young Rider Jersey and finishing third in the GC. The details of the third grand tour of the season, the Vuelta a España, will be revealed on Wednesday in Sevilla, Spain. 2010′s Vuelta will begin on August 28th and will end on September 19th, and is expected to stay in Spain. The 65th Vuelta is said to open with a team time trial in Sevilla, held under lights to avoid the summer heat of Andalucia. The course will be 18km and will begin at 9pm and end at 11pm, which is very late for any race. It is likely that the Vuelta will return to the Pyrenees and Asturias, as they didn’t include them this year. Stay tuned for more details.

World champion Australian cyclist Cadel Evans has confirmed that he will be racing in the 2010 Giro d’Italia. This will be the first time he’s raced the Giro in eight years. Evans told Italy’s sports daily Gazzetta Dello Sport that he plans to race the Giro as well as two other events by RCS Sports; the Monte Paschi Eroica on March 6th and the Tirreno-Adriatico from March 10th to 16th. The 2010 Giro will begin Rotterdam in the Netherlands on May 8th, and will finish on May 30th in Verona, Italy. Evans will be joined at the Giro by his BMC teammate Alessandro Ballan. Angelo Zomegnan, the Giro’s director, is glad that BMC decided to send both riders to the race. “It’s a proud moment for all of us at RCS,” he says.
