Five riders from Team BMC have spent two weeks on Spain’s island of Mallorca, as the weather there is much better during this time of year than it is in Switzerland. Riders Martin Kohler, Mathias Frank, Thomas Frei, Florian Stalder and Alex Moos got together and took advantage of the warmer climate in Mallorca. “This is the second year in a row that we have come here to train in December. We make a happy group; we can put in some serious hours every day,” says Kohler. “We’ve had a few rainy days, but it is generally about 13°C, which is great considering we would be facing -3°C at home!” The riders have different schedules, beginning at different times throughout the day. “Some of us start a little earlier so we’ll slip in a few intervals, while some guys like Mathias and Florian have a…

Two-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador has announced today that he will be starting his 2010 season with Portugal’s Tour de Algarve in February. “Last year I liked the race and I think it’s ideal to start the season. After that, I’ll go to the Paris-Nice (beginning of March) where we’ll be mainly looking to work on a team level, concentrating on tactics and coordination. In 2009 I won at Algarve, but this year I’m going to take it relatively easy, although I always like to be good at racing and I want to start,” says Contador, who won the Tour de Algarve last year too. He said that he also wants to participate in the Tour of Catalonia in March and the Tour of the Basque Country in April. He’s got a plate full of stage races for this year, but one-day…

After Australia, the Spaniard will go to the Tour Méditerranéen, Tour du Haut-Var, Paris-Nice, Vuelta a Catalunya, and Vuelta al País Vasco. Bradley Wiggins is aiming high in 2010, and he has made it known that he plans on doing big things at the Giro d’Italia in May. His main goals will be the prologue and the first pink leader’s jersey, while leading Team Sky during the entire race. Unlike most riders, Wiggins plans on doing well at the Giro, not just using it to prepare for the Tour de France. “I will be there and not only to prepare for the Tour. The Giro is an important race. I will aim for the prologue in Holland and the time trial in Verona,” he said. “In 2010, with respect to this year, I will concentrate on two goals: to do well at the Giro and for the Tour’s classification. A decision is required: look at Sastre, who also aimed for the Giro, then went…

Team Quick Step is going through some financial troubles going into the 2010 season, admits the team’s general manager Patrick Lefevere. The team has no plans to sign any additional riders for next year. “We need to start the next season with 26 or 27 riders, and I don’t have any hope of increasing the number of riders,” Lefevere said to Gazet van Antwerpen. Less riders means less races in 2010 for Team Quick Step. “In May, the Giro, the Tour of Belgium and the Tour of California are all running almost simultaneously. We will have to skip one of these races. I have to fight to find the money and it still remains to be seen whether I have the money for Allan Davis,” Lefevere adds. Allan Davis announced that he was leaving the team earlier this month, but Lefevere doesn’t plan…

US-based Continental team Type 1 has invited the public to take part in a ride with the team as part of its “Pedal with the Pros” fundraiser in February. For $5,000, participants will be flown to northeastern Georgia, where they will be housed, fed, and receive Team Type 1 gear. The team’s CEO, Phil Southerland, said that the fundraiser started with inquiries from fans about how they can show support for the only pro team with type 1 diabetes. “This is a great way to give those people a real hands-on experience at what the ‘pro lifestyle’ – and more specifically, what the ‘pro lifestyle with diabetes’ is like. We can show people with and without the disease the additional steps our athletes take to be the best they can be, and how we use diabetes to make us better people,” he said. He…
