Team Milram’s sponsor, German dairy company Milram, has said that they are not likely to renew their mutual contract after it expires at the end of 2010. “As things currently stand, a renewal of the contract is not something we’re considering,” said Godja Soennichsen, Milram spokeswoman. One reason could be the doping controversy, which is leading to a decline in cycling interest in Germany. Or, it could be the economy. Or both. Gerry van Gerwen, the team’s chief, says that he will fight to try and find a German sponsor. “Germany is such a big country, and it’s bang in the middle of Europe,” he said. Team Milram will begin the 2010 season with a 24-man roster.

Venezuelan climber José Rujano has not made many headlines since his third place finish in the 2005 Giro d’Italia. This year, he claims he’s still got it, and is aiming for another Giro top three. “I will not go to the Giro just to race, no. I will fight to be among the top three. I want to win it. Now I am a lot more mature, I know what I have to do. And the most important thing is that ISD-Neri has accepted that my preparation be the same as what I did in 2005,” Rujano said in an interview in Venezuela. Rujano is acting as his own manager this year, and will begin his season at the Táchira race from January 13th through 24th, after which he’ll make his way to the Tour of Malaysia. “I consider myself the third-best climber in the…

Team Vorarlberg-Corratec has announced that Renée Haselbacher has extended his contract for one more year with the Australian team. 32-year-old Haselbacher took his time to make a decision on whether or not to retire. “For a long time I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life,” he said. His 2009 season was riddled with injury and illness; he had a crash in the Ronde van Vlaanderen, which left him with a broken elbow and fractured face, and was diagnosed with mononucleosis in September. His 17-month-old son, Renée junior, played a part in his return to racing. “I absolutely want to present him with a victory. Until then I can’t stop riding,” he said. Haselbacher will begin his season with the Tour de Langkawi in March….

Oscar Freire has enjoyed many Tour de France and Vuelta a España stage wins, but there is one Grand Tour that he has yet to participate in; the Giro d’Italia. That will change this year, as he will begin the race in Amsterdam on May 18th. “As the Giro starts in Holland, the team is interested that I race it. I think the Giro fits well to my characteristics. The finishes are difficult and are more complicated to control by the teams, so that way I can have more opporunities. It would be great to win a stage,” said Freire. He will ride the Tour as well, but this year, he won’t be taking part in the Vuelta. “I will do different preparation for the worlds. Other years I didn’t race the Vuelta and I was good. There’s no problem in…

Jacques de Ciaurriz, head of the Chatenay-Malabry laboratory, has died at age 60. De Ciaurriz is known as a pioneer in the fight against doping in the world of sports, lending a hand in developing a test in the year 2000 to detect the banned blood-booster EPO. This was extremely helpful to the process of ridding sports of doping, and also scaring would-be dopers away from it. “The fight against doping in sport has lost one of its most eminent scientists. Jacques de Ciaurriz was not only a skilled researcher, but also a man willing to share his scientific knowledge with the anti-doping community to help advance the greater cause in the fight against doping in sport,” said WADA chief John Fahey. De Ciaurriz was a chemist by profession and worked as a pharmaceutical researcher and professor at a Paris university prior to being appointed…
