Andre Greipel continued his winning form right down to the end as he clinched this year’s Tour Down Under (his second) last Sunday in spectacular fashion.

Greipel fought and managed to maintain his 11-second overall lead over Luis Leon Sanchez and finished in 5th place in the final stage. This is the second championship for the German rider in the Australian tour, as he won his first Tour Down Under back in 2008.

Meanwhile, Chris Sutton earned the first-ever stage win for Team Sky as he and teammate Greg Henderson again posted a one-two podium finish on the last stage of the tour. This stage win completed a spectacular season opener for the newly-formed British team.

Henderson finished in 2nd place overall while Luis Leon Sanchez earned honors for 3rd overall. Lance Armstrong finished the stage in 77th place and 25th overall. His time was 1:03 behind Greipel’s accumulated…

Andre Greipel is proving himself more than a match for anyone in the 2010 Tour Down Under, as he earns his 2nd consecutive stage win in this year’s Australian tour this Wednesday.

The dominant star of Team HTC-Columbia narrowly beat the rest of the pack by coming into the closing stretch and across the finish line with a frenetic sprint.  This win adds to his chances of securing another Tour Down Under title, the first of which he won back in 2008.

Greipel missed last year’s Tour Down Under when he had to undergo a shoulder surgery after a bad accident, and was out of action for 4 months.

Lance Armstrong, however, said that Greipel still has to face a lot of tough challenges in the later stages, but admitted that the German rider is “showing great form” and is definitely the man to beat in this season’s Australian race. Armstrong…

the 2010 tour down under andré greipel gets the first stage win   The 2010 Tour Down Under: André Greipel Gets the First Stage Win Dubbed on his team as “the strongest man on earth”, André Greipel showed his strength early in the 2010 Tour Down Under as he led Team HTC-Columbia to the 88-mile first stage win, while Lance Armstrong finished “a pretty uneventful day” riding among the bunch, as he called it.

Greipel, who dominated the Tour Down Under last 2008 with five stage wins overall, left 132 other riders in the dust as he sprinted across the finish line in Tanunda last Tuesday.

The star of the HTC-Columbia team was a favorite to win the Cancer Council Helpline Classic last Sunday, but was forced to watch Team Sky take the victory as Greg Henderson and Chris Sutton scored a 1-2 combo for Team Sky.
