Mark Cavendish, a cyclist from England, had an amazing 2009 season that saw wins in Milan-Sanremo, three stages of the Giro d’Italia, and six stages at the Tour de France. Because of this, 26 British sports editors have put Cavendish on the top 10 list for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award. The nominees will be voted by the public live on December 13th. Cavendish will have strong competition, however, from Formula One champion Jensen Button, diver Tom Daley, Manchester United player Ryan Giggs, heptathlete Jessica Ennis, triple jumper Phillips Idowu, heavyweight boxer David Haye, England cricket captain Andrew Strauss, tennis player Andy Murray, and, finally, world gymnastics champion Beth Tweddle. Check back soon to see if Mark Cavendish wins the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award!

With La Ruta de los Conquistadores coming to a close in its final day, stage four, Manuel Prado comes out on top for the men and Louise Kobin for the women. For Prado, its his first win at La Ruta; Kobin has won it before, the last time was in 2005. Stage four was plagued with rain, as race media director J. Andres Vargas explains; “It’s rained all night in Turrialba and all day throughout the race, non-stop. One river had so much water that riders had to be detoured to the main highway, a fascinating display for cars driving towards the Caribbean coast.” Special carts were even created to transport racers over the bridges. All together, 172 racers from all over the world took part in La Ruta de los Conquistadores.
