Cancellara TT Bike Banned by UCI

Cancellara TT Bike Banned by UCI

It turns out that Fabian Cancellara has to cancel his plans for using his Specialized time trial bike, since the UCI has banned it from the races. Needless to say, this news is not going down well for unhappy Team Saxo Bank owner Bjarne Riis.

Riis claims that the UCI’s decision to ban the TT bike is “very disturbing” and “beyond contempt”, and that the rules are so complicated, no one can understand them. Riis also insists that the Specialized bike they were planning on using for their time trials this season is “both durable and safe”.

Fans may remember that Tour de France winner Alberto Contador was also prevented from riding a Specialized TT bike at the Volta ao Algarve. This is the same model that World TT champ Fabian Cancellara wanted to ride, before the UCI also closed the door on him.

Bjarne Riis complains that “it is always about little details such as this,” apparently referring to the aerodynamic cone at the front of the controversial TT bike. Specialized, the manufacturer of the bike, has asserted that the unique design of this nose cone improves the stability of the bike, but the UCI thinks otherwise and feels that the cone’s sole purpose is for improving aerodynamics.

Be it as it may, but Team Saxo Bank has no choice but to look for another bike to use in their time trials. As Riis said, “We are working hard to find a time trial bike model that can be used. But it is a strange thing to run into at this stage of the season, when we have already started racing.”

Cervelo Project California The Ultralight Frame

  • Share/Bookmark

Out of the new Cervelo’s test facility situated in the West Coast came out the latest product, an ultralight carbon road frame. This is the result of Project California. The Carbon Road frame was said to be weight at 700g and has a size of 54 centimeters. This same prototype was used by Test Team rider Thor Hushovd, however it weighed only 648g. This data was gathered from the Cervelo’s website where a video posted indicated the slight difference of 52 grams.

Pictures presented of the video illustrate a kind of “ Super R3 “ when it came to the basic layout and shape. The chainstays appear to be tall and wide and the seatstays are spindly , thus making the down tube presents itself in rather innovative “squoval” profile. Cervelo co-founder, Gerrard Vroomen remains mum regarding the matter and could not be reached for further comments and data on this matter.

Project California frame as seen by its flat black appearance indicates that it has carbon fiber dropouts rather than the bottom bracket and R3 – SL’s aluminum ones combined. For the purpose of eradicating the need for an alloy sleeve, a direct drop-in bearings or press fit cups are set replacing the standard BB 30.

However, it has not indicated that a taper head tube is included to add more grit and stiffness allowing the use of a bigger down tube which will lead to a heavier frame. It is very much likely that an external cable routing is set into place along with the usual round telescoping seatpost as conventionally seen. The video as posted by Hushvod has depicted that the ultralight carbon frame is closely similar to the S2 and S3 when it comes to the level of comfort it provides. The great difference is that the current models have a greater front triangle and bottom bracket stiffness.

Aside from being ultralight, stiff and considerately comfortable, Project California is also quite costly and will be made available sometime in August 2010 with a tag price of US $9,600 per frame. It will be releasing its limited “Made in USA” edition in the market where each frame is handmade by the engineers who designed it.

Lost and Found: Trek Equinox TTX SSL

The stolen Trek Equinox TTX SSL, which was taken last November 2009 at Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop has been recovered. This was the bike used by Ryan Baumann during the 2009 season under Team Trek-Livestrong.

The bike, which had a worth around $10,000, was at Mellow Johnny’s for storage. Identifying marks on the bike would be the customized paint job on the aero bars and Baumann’s name etched on the top tube. It also had a Bontrager Aeolus wheel and a Zipp disc rear.

The stolen bike was found at a flea market in Guanajuato, Mexico. Minus the wheels, the rest of the bike was in good condition. The cyclist, who bought the stolen bike last January 2010, brought it to a Trek representative to have it authenticated. The bike was consequently returned to Ted Arnold, the store manager of Mello Johnny’s Bike Shop.

No news as to what would be the fate of the bike for this season. However, cyclist Ryan Baumann will be joining the 2010 Bahati Foundation Pro Cycling Team with fellow cyclists Nathan O’Neill and Hilton Clarke. [...]
