They could never hope to equal the elite riders of the sport, physically-wise, but Team Wiggle Tandem is hoping that the high-tech training and equipment available to them will be enough to earn them a long-distance cycling record or two.

David Harmon, the Eurosport cycling commentator, and wilderness guide Jez Hastings are embarking on a two-year mission to win a series of long distance cycling records, all in accordance with the Road Records Association rules.

Harmon says that even though they are both aware of the discrepancies between the past recordholders’ physical prowess and their own, still they are hoping that recent improvements in cycling technology will bring them a good chance of success in their record attempts.

Harmon and Hastings will ride the ‘Rocket 1′ tandem bike, designed and built by Terry Dolan. Using ‘Rocket 1′ will also let the pair assist in testing a set of developmental technology…

The Rocky Mountain Bicycle Festival is scheduled for August 7 and 8, 2010 and will be held at the National Western Complex in Denver, Colorado. The event is now in its 3rd year, beginning as the Rocky Mountain Bicycle Show. Over the years, it has enjoyed an impressive growth and popularity among cycling enthusiasts, which inspired a change in names.

Carol Johnson, the event director, agrees that “calling it a festival better describes what the weekend is all about.” The festival pays tribute to all forms of cycling. You name it, they’ve got it: road, mountain, track, cyclocross, triathlon, recumbent, cruiser, and everything else that has pedals and two wheels.

Fans and pros alike will get to see the featured production and custom-made bikes, components, and accessories, while specialized service companies and non-profit organizations come together to add more value and variety to the event.

However, if you’re thinking…

Charlie Simpson saw some sad images of the Haiti earthquake and knew he had to do something. What many might not know, Charlie Simpson is 7 years old, and what he did next many people young or old have never done. Charlie organized a sponsored bike-a-thon around his park in London, UK. Charlie wanted to raise at least $800 USD, but since he started the UNICEF made a donation of $109,000 USD. Not only has Charlie help make a huge donation, he now holds the record for most funds raised in a single day. Charlie rode 5 miles, which consisted of him riding around South Park in Fulham with his father and a friend, and at 1.5 miles, Charlie was tired, but kept going for Haiti. Great job Charlie, you are a inspiration to all of us.

Meet the Kitten — a 205-lb, 7-speed biking behemoth that looks as if the frame was welded together by a drunk mechanic, and then threw in the tires from a dilapidated car.

Yes, folks, this bike uses car tires. And the frame has edges and is boxy, not like the rounded tubing you’d expect. It has headlights, too. About the only things that are recognizable here are the bicycle pedals and the saddle.

The headlights are powered by a solar panel, and you brake by using your foot, not your hands. Well, you don’t have to drag your foot on the road to stop it (fortunately), but you need to step on a pedal that attaches to a pad that comes into contact with the rear tire and stops your two-wheeled car from moving.

Designer Julien Bergignat holds the creative mind behind her echo-friendly Tattoo bike helmet. The armadillo inspired helmet is made out of polypropylene from recyclables.

The Tattoo bike helmet is easy to store. Its design allows users to transform the helmet into a completely flat state, enabling its fit in a backpack.

To reassemble the Tattoo, match up the pressure clips with its corresponding wing. You’re ready to hit the road safely again in seconds.

Bergignat’s cost-effective design protects its users with expanded polypropylene (EPP). Its minimal design makes it extremely light in weight, too.
