2010 Planet Bike Cyclocross Season

2010 planet bike cyclocross season 300x200   2010 Planet Bike Cyclocross SeasonThe Wisconsin Cycling Association has added some thrilling events to its 12-race 2010 Planet Bike Cyclocross Season. Now in its 15th season, more fun and daring events are introduced within the cyclocross. Come September, the Wisconsin series offers the 2010 Planet Bike Cup, a UCI and USGP races in Sun Prairie.

Planet Bike Cup brings a lot of attraction in the national scene bring in spectators, fans and local tourists in the area. Perking up the races should benefit all. “We have a long tradition of quality cyclocross races in Wisconsin,” according to Jerry Pearce, cyclocross organizer of the WCA Cyclocross Committee. “And with the national attention the Planet Bike Cup brings to the area, we wanted to tweak the races…” he said.

Pearce adds that the three new races promises a variety of fun and challenge to all who will be joining in the events.

2010 Tour of Belgium Cyclocross Contenders

2010 tour of belgium cyclocross contenders 225x300   2010 Tour of Belgium Cyclocross ContendersThe 80th edition of the Tour of Belgium started three days ago. It is a five day stage race which started in 1908. It has drawn great names of cyclocross riders from Europe. The 2008 World Cyclocross Champion Lars Boom took the leader’s jersey in last year’s races.

Today, the bikers will race through the 192km stretch to Mechelen and tomorrow for the 16.7km time trial. In Herstal, a hilly arena of 173km is the site of the final stage. The riders have completed two stages, one around 156km at Eeklo and a 162km cruise into Knokke-Heist.

At the starting line, the field was packed with tough cyclocross riders. Sven Nys is present with rival Sven Vanthourenhout. The Telenet-Fidea team includes Bart Wellens and Kevin Pauwels. Bronze medalist at Belgium’s Elite National Cyclocross Championships Tom Meeusen is also geared up to race with Rob Peeters.

There has been a lot of speculation over Zdeněk Štybar and which team he will be with for the season 2010/2011. Štybar has a contract with Telenet-Fidea until February 2011 but on his website, he mentioned that he hasn’t finalized on a team yet.

Kevin Pauwels, Štybar’s teammate, is also known to be on the same boat as the Czech rider. Telenet-Fidea’s team manager Hans van Kasteren and Jurgen Mettepenningen of Sunweb are on the verge of a lawsuit over the recent events. However, if there was a team who had a chance at grabbing Štybar, it would be Lanbouwkrediet Credit Agricole.

Talk of a team where Sven Nys and Štybar are present is a dream for many cyclocross fans. The impressive Nys together with Štybar who is no lightweight after winning the Worlds, the World Cup overall, the Superprestige and the UCI overall ranking.

2010 – 2011 National Cyclocross Calendar

20102011 national cyclocross calendar 296x300   2010   2011 National Cyclocross CalendarThe 2010 – 2011 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Calendar shall open at Brenigsville, Pennsylvania with the Nittany Lion Cross on September 11, 2010. The cyclo-cross season for the west coast shall kick off with the Star Crossed Cyclocross on September 18 at Redmond, Virginia. The season will end with a new Kingsport Cyclocross Cup in Kingsport, Tenessee on January 15, 2011.

Calendared for this year’s cyclocross competitions are 8 UCI category-one and 45 category-two events. The United States leads as the more internationally sanctioned cyclocross races in the UCI Cyclocross Calendar with a total of 53 events in this series followed by Belgium with 32 events. The 2010 MFG Cyclocross schedule was released at the Single Speed Cyclocross World Championship Coming Out Party. The series is composed of six races which will begin in September. The final race will be on November 14 with the 2nd Annual Woodland Park Gran Prix.

Terry Buchanan, co-founder of the event, shares his excitement over the event. “MFG Cyclocross saw tremendous success last year during our inaugural season. We received enormous support from the Seattle cyclocross scene as participants and sponsors alike put trust in our new series.”

Zac Daab of MFG Cyclocross further adds, “Last year we produced a cyclocross series that brought a fresh attitude to ‘cross racing in Seattle. We are humbled by the feedback we received, yet we look forward to continually improving what we offer our participants in 2010.”

New Kentucky Cyclocross Course

new kentucky cyclocross course 300x225   New Kentucky Cyclocross CourseCovington, Kentucky will push through with plans for a new cyclocross race and training park. It will be in Devou Park, situated on the area nearby the Montague and Sleepy Hollow intersection. Covington is second to Louisville to create a venue for year round cyclocross racing in Kentucky.

The project will utilize unused existing road beds to ensure a low ecological impact in the area. Matt Bell, the project head, said that the permanent cyclocross park will take part and enhance Devou Park’s existing network of mountain bike trails, “it was important to me in the course design to beautify and enhance the park as well.” Devou Park hosts the opening day of the Cincinnati UCI3 International Cyclocross Festival each year.

Another goal for the project is to successfully establish Devou Park as a regional and national cycling venue. Helping Bell achieve this is Chad Irey of the International Mountain Bike Association…

cyclocross now with horror at harding hill 194x300   Cyclocross now with Horror at Harding HillNew Hampshire’s The Horror at Harding Hill will debut its cyclocross category at this year’s event. It is the fifth race for the EFTA (Eastern Fat Tire Association) Championship. The event will be at Webb’s Forest at Harding hill, Sunapee on July 18, 2010.

Steve White, promoter of the race shares that the 500 acre forest is owned by one of the members of the Sunapee Lions Club. The course was designed to include a technical mix of single, double and road track. There will be one large climb and several tricky areas like “The Root Canal” and “The Pig Sty”. The “canal” route has tree roots along the way while the “sty” has muddy trails.
