Schleck’s First Stage Win Stage 8 of Tour de France 2010
Andy Schleck (Saxo Bank) wins Stage 8 of the Tour de France, neck to neck with Sammy Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) on the final kilometer. Alberto Contador (Astana) was at Schleck’s heels but he was still not fast enough to catch up with him.
The break in the peloton gave way to a strong group up in front. Contador tried several times to fight off attacks with the help of his team. However, when it was most needed, Contador was left unprotected from Schleck’s attack.
Olympic champ Sanchez definitely had a chance to beat Schleck when Schleck slacked on his back wheel but he missed this tiny window of opportunity. Schleck finished 10 seconds ahead Sanchez.
As the stage progressed, Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) was on track to get the yellow jersey from Sylvain Chavanel (Lampre). He succeeded and became the first World Champion to wear the yellow jersey after Tom Boonen in 2006.
