As of now, all bikes manufactured after the 17th of May and all the bikes to be sold to kids of 12 and under must pass the test conducted by independent laboratory in compliance to the federal bicycle regulations. Moreover, the industry is waiting for the response for their plea to push the deadline back, for the third time.

All adult bikes made after the said date, need not be tested by a third-party, however, it must be shipped with a certificate of compliance, 16 CFR 1512, pursuant to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of August 2008.

A petition was filed with the Consumer Product Safety Commission last April 1 by the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association, requesting the Monday deadline be extended to one year giving ample time for more labs to obtain accreditation by CPSC as testing facilities. In 2007, the first Hy-Vee ITU World Cup was held in Downtown Des Moines winding up the front of the Iowa State Capitol drawing more than 2,000 Elite and age-group athletes to participate. The event raised $250,000 for charity as Rasmus Henning of Denmark and Laura Bennett of USA took home the inaugural titles.

Two months prior to the Beijing Olympic Games, the US qualifying event for the games was held at West Des Moines, the site of the 2008 edition of the race. Due to terrible flooding in Des Moines area it was situated seven miles outside the State Capitol. Henning won the men’s competition for the second time while Emma Snowsill took the women’s top awards and win the gold in Beijing. Top finishers for the USA were Hunter Kemper and Sarah Haskins earning slots to the Beijing Olympic Triathlon.

Brett Lancaster of Cervelo started the rainy stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California 10 seconds behind. From his 87th position, Lancaster finished 1st, completing the 110.1 mile course from Davis to Santa Rosa Road with a time of 4:38:48. Liquigas’ Peter Sagan came second and Lars Boom of Rabobank came in at third place.

RadioShack’s Levi Leipheimer finished seventh while teammate Lance Armstrong reached the finish line as the 18th rider. Currently, Leipheimer holds the 12th place overall. Armstrong is 18th place overall.

For Lancaster, he is now leading over Sagan and Karl Menzies of United Healthcare with a 10 second time bonus from his win. He has a 4 second lead over them now.

Lancaster has always been a team player, supporting Heinrich Haussler and Thor Hushovd but he was happy over his win. Haussler finished in 41st place and never made it to the lead group of 26 riders…

Thousands of cyclists from all over Quebec, Canada are participating in the memorial cross country rides on Wednesday to commemorate victims of cycling accidents, the Tour du Silence. It will be a somber day in Quebec as more than 400 cities around the world are observing the event.

In 48 hours, eight cyclists were hit by vehicles and four cyclists have died in the province. On Friday, south of Montreal, three women were struck dead by a pick up truck on Highway 112 in Rougemont. They were part of a group of six cyclists on their way to Sherbrooke for triathlon training.

On Route 117 in Val Morin the next evening, a 57 year old man was killed when he was run down by a car in northwest Montreal. A 44 year old woman was driving and was arrested to be charged with impaired driving resulting to death.

He further said, “But if something happens, like Levi crashes or something, of course plans change and we have a stellar squad that could come through for sure. Levi is certainly the guy to win this race.”

At the Walt Disney World Resort’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campgrounds, O’Donnell crossed the finish line at 3:51:18 while Cave defended her title successfully with a time of 4:14:22.

For its professional prize money plus 75 slots to the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3, Rohto Ironman 70.3 Florida is offering $30,000. To be presented by Ford, it will be held in one to the world’s top beach destinations, in Clearwater, Florida come November 13 this year.

Today, the men’s field composed of the top five finishers included Bryan Rhodes of New Zealand and TJ Tollakson of USA. David Kahn was first out of the water followed by O’Donnell and Dirk Bockel, the defending champion.

bruised and beaten at stage 1 of tour of california1 200x300   Bruised and beaten at Stage 1 of Tour of CaliforniaSeveral crashes on the finish circuit left cyclists bruised and with only minor injuries during stage one for the Amgen Tour of California. Tom Boonen, Stuart O’Grady and George Hincapie were among the few entangled in the chaos that happened at the last five kilometers.

Boonen was at the near head of the peloton when he crashed. Hincapie recalls the incident, “Tom Boonen went down and I rode over his bike. I’m disappointed because I had good legs.”
Matt Crane of United Healthcare-Maxxis also shares, “I thought I was in good shape to get around the crash and then all of the sudden, Boonen was on the ground in front of me. I really couldn’t do anything to avoid him and I T-boned him.”
