Levi Leipheimer of Team Mellow Johnny’s was victorious as he completed the Tour of the Gila, which started in Silver City, by taking home the gold. Darren Lill of Team Fly V Australia won the the final stage of the tour.
Leipheimer shares his pleasure over his win, “I came here from sea level, and for me to perform as good as I did shows me that I’m in great shape. Honestly, I felt fine the whole week, and I was never in trouble. So I’m pretty happy. … I dont think it could have gone any better for us.”
Leipheimer went into the 170.1 km stage with a lead of 59 seconds. He came in 10th at the final stage. Taking second place overall is Tom Danielson of DZ Nuts. He also came in at the same time with Leipheimer. Lill’s teammate Phil Zajicek finished 8th and rounded up the podium as third placer overall.
The contenders for the final stage were Lill, Max Jenkins of United Healthcare and Robert Britton of Bissell Pro Cycling. During the final climb, Lill broke away from his rivals and crossed the finish line alone. Happy about his win, Lill said, “This is right up there with my win in the Tour of Utah last year, it is a win I am going to cherish.”
