The stage four of the Amgen Tour of California was won by Liquigas’ Francesco Chicchi. Chicchi outsprinted Mark Cavendish of HTC-Columbia and JJ Haedo of Saxo Bank. On the other hand, David Zabriskie of Garmin-Transitions retains his overall lead.
The stage was set with a break composed of Rabobank’s Lars Boom, Quick Step’s Jurgen De Walle, Robert Britton of Bissell, Jeremy Powers of Jelly Belly Peanut Butter Kenda and Ryan Anderson of Kelly Benefit Strategies. The strong group eventually fell apart by the first climb of the stage.
Boom was the last man left at 6 kilometers remaining. His teammates Maarten Tjallingi and Paul Martens also made a run for it but the final chapter was left to a field sprint. Chicchi stood to lose against the world’s best sprinters Haedo and Cavendish but he pulled it off. “Peter Sagan put me in good position from 300 meters to go,”said the victor. Chicchi took the lead and crossed the finish line first.
