Mattia Gavazzi of Colnago CSF-Inox was provisionally suspended by the International Cycling Union (UCI) for testing positive for cocaine. Cadel Evans of BMC won the Fleche Wallone, beating Joaquin Rodriguez of Katusha and Alberto Contador of Astana.

Evans sped past Contador and Rodriguez in the last 100 meters of the one-day classic. “”I’ve finished second here (in2008). I’ve finished fourth (in 2009) and I think ninth (in 2005). So it feels great to win here, especially wearing the rainbow stripes of world champion.”

With tactical precision, Evans limited his losses on areas where there are steep climbs and forged ahead when the road leveled out. This allowed him to gain momentum among the rest and this brought him first to the finish line. Contador, on the other hand, accelerated too early and continued to maintain his strides but was overtaken by Rodriguez at the 1.3 km climb.

Contador comments on his performance, “I’m happy with my result. It’s frustrating to be so close and not win, but I am not a Classics…
