The 15th edition of the ITU Triathlon World Cup Ishigaki was won by Valentin Meshcheryakov of Russia. This was his first World Cup title. He finished five seconds ahead of Yuichi Hosoda of Japan with a time of 1:54:02. The bronze medal goes to Japan’s Ryosuke Yamamoto.
It was a tight race with Australia’s Clayton Fettell who got out of the water first and into the transition. He was followed by another group that included Meshcheryakov. Fettell tried to keep his lead on the bike at the second lap of the seven-lap bike ride and succeeded.
With a two minute advantage, Fettell did his best to maintain first on the run but struggled as Aussie David Dellow, Hosoda, Yamamoto and Manuel Huerta of USA came up behind him at an energized pace. Soon the lead pack were Meshcheryakov, Hosoda and Yamamoto.
Meshcheryakov was hard to catch during the final stretch and he crossed the finish line, winning the day for Russia. Happy about his win, Meshcheryakov said, “I didn’t believe that I could catch the leader until the end of the race, but I did that and I am very happy.”
Hosoda was also all smiles. “I’m very excited because it’s my first podium ever, and it’s my home turf. I think the cheers from my home-country supporters was the power for me to get on the podium today.”
