Karsten Kroon of BMC Racing Team bore facial wounds after his crash with Dominik Roels of Team Milram at the Fleche Wallone. The pileup also included Yaroslav Popovych of RadioShack.
They were 75km from the finish line when by the bend, Roels fell bringing down with him several riders. Roels took a hard hit by the rail barrier and seemed to be injured quite seriously. Kroon sat by the side of the road, waiting for the medical team to assist them. He had blood streaming down his face.
Racing team director of BMC John Lelangue described Kroon’s condition, “His face is extremely swollen and his eye is totally closed. We will need a few days for the swelling to go down, then we will see how things will go.”
The Dutchman was able to attend Cadel Evan’s victory dinner last night. BMC Racing management reports that Kroon was in good spirits as the team celebrates Evans’ win over Joaquin Rodriguez and Alberto Contador.
Sadly, Kroon hoped to win the Fleche Wallone after missing his chance at victory at the Amstel Gold Race last Sunday. He only finished ninth then. Lelangue added that Kroon will be in recovery for the time being, “We’ll definitely give him time to recover and come back to a normal level.”
