Andy Potts of USA and Samantha Warriner of New Zealand won the Ochsner Ironman 70.3 New Orleans race. Potts and Warriner credited their wins to half-marathon endeavors when it really counted. The triathlon covered 1.2 mile swim, 56 miles on bike and a 13.1 mile run.
For Potts, he began with confident strokes at 23:58 swim time. He ventured into the T1 with a lead over Graham O’Grady of New Zealand. Potts was taken over by Kiwi Terenzo Bozzone on the bike but it was only temporary. Potts soon outran everyone at 1:12;40 half-marathon, making him finish first at 3:43:44.
Second place went to Bozzone and Paul Amey of United Kingdom took third place. Australia’s Chris McCormack failed to finish the race. He did not continue to see the run through and turned up ninth on the bike.
On the other hand, the women’s race was not as straightforward as the men’s. The swim was led by Dede Griesbauer of USA at 27:58. The others followed Griesbauer’s lead but fellow American Amy Marsh took the lead away from her in the bike course. In T2, another American Linsey Corbin was also hot on wheels after Marsh and Griesbauer.
Warriner bested them all in the run at a half-marathon time of 1:21:35. She came fifth on the bike but showed everyone she was the better triathletes, finishing first at 4:16:44 overall. Second place went to Corbin and Marsh finished the race at third.
