We the People is known for their BMX bikes, and is quite popular, but the company is pushing the bar and is getting ready to release BMX sneakers under the name Almond. This project has been kept under wraps for sometime, and finally we have a preview of whats to come. As of now, no information on release or retail is known, but the first model to release features red and grey, and is made up of suede. We can imagine since the bikes are strong, the sneakers will last as well.

Steve Schets is Belgium’s solution to the injured Iljo Keisse. The workload will be heavier for the rest of the male cyclists in the Belgian team. A reshuffle will be done when they compete at this week’s World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Due to a broken collarbone, Keisse was ruled out of the championships. The Quick Step rider experienced a training crash over at the Ballerup Arena, Copenhagen. He was also planning to race the point and scratch races and the Madison.

Ingmar De Poortere will be racing for the points race. Schets will be partnered with him in the Madison. For the scratch race, Tim Merterns will cover Keisse’s slot. De Poortere will still be racing the men’s 4000 metre individual pursuit.

Head coach of the New Zealand National Team Tim Carswell have not yet finalized the team listing for the UCI World Track Cycling Championships in Denmark on Thursday.

Together with fellow coaches Dayle Cheatley and Justin Grace, Carswell shares that the team have settled in nicely and track sessions for them have been promising. “It is definitely going to be our toughest job to make the final decisions on who will start in the team pursuits, team sprints and some of the individual events because there is so little separating the riders.”

The sprint team for men’s will be comprised of Sam Webster, Ethan Mitchell, Eddie Dawkins, Simon Van Velthooven and Adam Stewart.

Carswell expects tough competitors at the World Championships. With names like Chris Hoy and other top cyclists who gave up the worlds for the Beijing Olympics are now back.

Andy Schleck of Team Saxo Bank continues to suffer an awful season this year as he suffers yet another setback by having to drop out of the 2010 Volta a Catalunya before the start of the 2nd stage. Neither Schleck or representatives from Team Saxo Bank have given statements regarding the specific reason.

Schleck had joined the opening time trial race for the Volta a Catalunya and finished at 131st, but he was absent from the starting line of the 2nd stage this Tuesday. The Saxo Bank rider had injured his knee when he was hurt in a car accident during training last December 2009, and had to undergo a series of medical treatments while training in the winter. He failed to make an early start for the 2010 season when his knee started acting up again last January this year.

The Absa Cape Epic began and first stage winners are Kevin Evans and his teammate Alban Lakata.

The time stamp for their win was 4:35.52. Team MTN Qhubeka/Topeak Ergon duo was ahead Christopher Sauser and Burry Stander by 3 minutes and 26 seconds. Songo-Specialized by DCM finished at 4:39.17. Emil Lindgren and Fabian Ginger of Team Rabobank-Giant Off Road Team came in at third place at 4:40.05. Bulls 1 came in fourth at 4:40.27. Karl Platt and Stefan Stahm were last year’s overall winners. In fifth place, Team Trek World Racing with the Flückiger brothers Lukas and Matthias, finished at 4:41.53.

Evans recalls their win, “Normally my first day is not a good one, but obviously we got a few things right today. It was a roller coaster ride, and I even had a puncture, but we kept it together with Alban saying it’s never over until it’s over.”

The Taipei Cycle Show was deemed a success. The exhibitors expressed their satisfaction over the business generated at the annual event.

Portland Design Works, a newbie exhibitor with only just over a year in the bicycle retail scene, attended the trade show with hopes to expand their reach around the globe. Erik Olson, co-founder of Portland Design Works, was quite pleased to have found distributors in Japan and Australia and hopes to target UK next.

Their 10×10 booth space was located in the far corner of the fourth floor hall but Olson was able to close deals on the distribution of their company’s aftermarket line of commuter accessories. Olson said that next year, they will go for a bigger booth (10×20) because the price is also reasonable.

Panaracer, the Japanese tire company, used the trade show to gauge the feedback of customers in regards to their 2011 line which they will present at…
