A lot of hype is being built around the Criterium International which is going to be held this weekend at Corsica. Most of the hype revolves around Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador racing against each other in the event, which would be their first ever since last year’s Tour de France.

However, Contador is downplaying the challenge that his former Astana teammate supposedly presents, saying that many other riders are in much better shape than Armstrong as of the moment, and is instead acknowledging Cadel Evans to be a stronger threat.

Armstrong and Contador were not even supposed to meet each other in this weekend’s Criterium International. The two feuding cyclists were instead expected to race in the 2010 Tour de France, not before, but somehow Contador decided to drop his scheduled participation in the Tour of Catalunya to instead ride in the Criterium.

The US Brompton race was won by Aaron Ritz and Beth Green. Both will be flying to England for the 5th Annual Brompton World Championships in October 3 at Blenheim Palace, England.

The Fairmount Park in Philadelphia was filled with 59 competitors on their Brompton bikes last March 20. This was the first ever Brompton Championship race in the US.

In the men’s division, Ritz finished the course in 18:28. His 2-speed Brompton S2L-X sped along the 6.2 mile course. David Wilcox of Broadway Bicycles in Jamaica Plain, MA, was the Men’s favorite rider but the time it took for him to unfold his bike at the beginning of the race was his blunder. Wilcox did his best and finished third while Peter Dalkner won the second place.

Women cyclists in London and the South East will be pleased to learn that a new road racing league was created for them. The London Women’s Cycle Racing League (LWCR) will have its first round this weekend.

The league aims to promote comradeship and sportsmanship through local competitions. Due to the growing number of interested women in the sport, the league was devised to make all affiliated clubs and individuals have a common meeting ground for competitions of interest.

The league is open from those who are new in racing to elite riders. The first race will be during the Surrey League at the Goodwood event in Chichester.

Maria David, spokeswoman of the LWCR, said that the league wants to change low turn up on races by sparking interest in the sport with the local girls.

The ‘Legend Award’ will be given to Ron Kiefel, the former 7-11 professional. The award was created to honor bicycle legends who have ridden the Redlands n their career. This will be awarded at the 2010 Redlands Bicycle Classic in California on Sunday.

Kiefel is honored to receive the award as one of the ‘Legends’ in Redlands Classic. The ceremony will be held before the start of the Sunset Loop. This was notably one of Kiefel’s favorite courses. Kiefel’s career also covered riding in the Tour de France seven times, winning the 1985 Giro d’Italia’s stage 15 and have won an Olympic medal.

Having won third overall at the Redlands twice in 1993 and 1994, Kiefel recalls great times at the classic. “The Redlands Classic was an important stepping stone for the 7-Eleven team’s success in Europe at races like the Giro D’Italia and Tour de France.”

Jeremiah Bishops and Tinker Juarez , the current riders for the Cannondale Factory Racing team are reinforced by cycling marathon riders Benjamin Sonntag and Alex Grant as Cannondale Factory Racing announced the signing up of these talented riders over the weekend. Their entry to the team is just right for the kick off of the US PRO XCT open in Fontana, California.

Sonntag, 29, made his mark during the 2009 results taking the fifth place in the German Cross Country national championship. He also came in second finishing the daring La Ruta de los Conquistadores. He is now based in Durango, Colorado and is from Willingen, Germany.

On the other hand, Grant also at 29, finished fourth at Leadville 100 last year. He placed overall second at La Ruta delos Conquistadores. He hails from Richmond, Vermont and now resides in Salt Lake City, Utah.
