Team Sky shows that they can multi-task with the best of them as Edvald Boasson Hagen wins the 3rd stage of the Tour of Oman while the rest of the team practices on their time trial equipment.

Team Sky sprinters Thomas Löfkvist, Michael Barry, Sylvain Calzati and Morris Possoni grabbed the chance to test their Pinarello TT bikes in Valencia, with team manager Dave Brailsford and director of operations Carsten Jeppesen in close supervision.

The riders must have been glad for the opportunity to put the TT bikes through their paces, as the opening time trial race in the Tour of Oman did not feature aero bikes. However, the team will get to ride the Pinarello machines in actual racing action at the upcoming Vuelta a Andalucia, which will begin this February 21.

Aside from testing out their TT bikes, Team Sky also did some training rides on the road in preparation…

Benoit Vaugrenard of Team FDJeux grabs the opening stage of the 2010 Volta a Algarve via a surprise attack that left several other sprinters in the dust. The Frenchman finished ahead of Joan Horrach (Katusha), who finished second, and Andre Greipel (HTC-Columbia) who finished third.

The starting bunch of riders in the first stage of this year’s Volta a Algarve included several sprinters hungry for a win, including defending champion Alberto Contador (Team Astana) who is always on the prowl for a victory in any race he’s in.

However, the 2009 Tour de France champion looked helpless as his attack near the final stretch failed to deliver him to the finish line. The main pack easily caught up with Team Astana’s star and Contador never had a chance to go for the win again.

Vaugrenard caught a tailwind just in time while sensing an opportunity to sprint…

The Tour de Mumbai will be held this weekend as India hosts the first-ever UCI-sanctioned road racing event in the country.

It certainly appears that a lot is riding on this event, since not only does the race feature several world-class cyclists racing with the best riders that India has to offer, but the race organizers are also looking for the race to boost public awareness of the sport.

Baqar Nasser, a former Indian national champion and now a member of the race committee, says that he is already excited at the opportunity of seeing so many top-notch cyclists competing in the invitation-only event. He adds that the local talent will be expected to race with a high level of competition. “I think they will be in the top 10,” Nasser says of the Indian cycling team.

The Tour de Mumbai is also supported by legendary cyclist Eddie Merckx, who…

Yale Creates Real Life Spokeless Bike

Those Yale guys have managed to do what the bike manufacturers could not: invent an actual spokeless working bicycle that anyone can ride today. Those other concept bikes you may have seen that purportedly feature hubless wheels? They still remain as concepts the last time we looked.

This bicycle from Yale has no hub, no spokes, and practically nothing else in the middle of the rear wheel. The inventors explained that a similar front wheel was in the works, but they ran out of time during the semester. Designing the front wheel, they added, would even be easier, since they won’t have to factor in the drivetrain.

The Yale inventors posted this description of the drivetrain on Reddit:

It’s a single speed setup. We used two cranks and two bottom brackets in the front to gear up the ratio. It goes from (IIRC) 53 to a 13, which…
