The 2010 edition of Gent-Wevelgem is going to be a climbing sensation, literally, with the addition of more steep ascents than was previously seen in last year’s event.

It is also a bit shorter, with 40 kilometers being cut off from the last planned route. The race was originally schduled to be held between the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix events, but was moved to a new slot and will now be held after the Milan-San Remo race. The course length is now 219 kilometers, featuring some fast portions for the sprinters, but also adding more sections with cobblestones and at least 16 short (but tough) climbs.

Organizers had been planning the race to be around 257km long, with the intention of attracting the riders who are training for the Ronde van Vlaanderen. The final course, however, shows significant portions have been changed. A more straightforward section now…

Team Kelly Benefit Strategies is returning to the 2010 season with much of its last-year roster in tow, and is looking for bigger events this year.

According to Jonas Carney, team director of Kelly Benefit Strategies, KBS is focusing on stage racing and one-day events as the team enters the new season. Last year saw the team focusing more on criterium racing, so this year, they are targeting international races, which includes the Tour de Langkawi this coming March, Padyak Pinoy (Tour of the Philippines, and also races in Uruguay, Thailand, Brittany, and France.

Last year, frontrunners Andrew Bajadali and Scott Zwiwanski both made it to the U.S. road nationals podium. Likewise, David Veilleux and Ryan Anderson also went one-two at the Canadian nationals in the time trial. But Carney says that everyone in the team is committed to win and is putting in their part on KBS’ victories….

The Webcor Builders women’s pro cycling team has just signed on for sponsorship with Ritchey Design, and will be joing their roster of other sponsored teams like Colavita-Baci presented by Cooking Light, Jamis-Sutter Home presented by Colavita and United Healthcare presented by Maxxis.

The Webcor Builders is acknowledged as the oldest professional women’s cycling team in North America. John Frechette, the chief operating officer for Ritchey, says that the company “is proud of each of the teams it has chosen to support for the 2010-11 season.”

Riders from all the sponsored teams will get to use Ritchey design products, including their WCS hammerhead TT bars, one-bolt posts, and the wheels, of course (WCS 4-Axis Stem, WCS Allo 1-Bolt, and WCS Super Zeta, to name a few.)

At least a few Tour de France contenders are expected to be at the starting line in the Volta ao Algarve, which will begin on February 17 in the southern part of Portugal. We’ll be expecting twenty three teams to join in the race which will end in Portimao on Sunday.

The five-day stage race will include Andreas Klöden and Levi Leipheimer of Team Radioshack, together with Alberto Contador (Astana), their former teammate and current champion of Volta ao Algraveformer. Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d’Epargne) who just won in the Tour of the Mediterranean will also be taking part in the race.

Likewise, Christian Vande Velde of Garmin-Transitions will be joining the tour to Portugal and will lead his team all by himself since Bradley Wiggins, his former teammate has changed teams and is now with the British Team Sky.
