Oscar Freire of Team Rabobank gets his 2nd straight win at the Vuelta a Andalucia as he beats Grega Bole and Simon Gerrans to the finish line for his second stage win of the race. The victory also earns Freire his third of the 2010 season.
The 3-time world champion is showing that he’s back in winning form, already winning more races this early in the season compared to last year’s dismal performance, where he only managed to bag two stage wins, both at the Tour de Romandie.
The leader’s jersey still remains with Sergio Padilla, however, as the Team Carmiooro-NGC rider finished strong in the stage, despite not getting into the top five. As for star sprinter Mark Cavendish, he had nothing left for the final sprint, as he could not even keep up with the front pack after having to navigate the final ascent at the Category 2 Puerto de Ojen.
José Angel Gómez Marchante (Andalucia-CajaSur) and Brice Feillu showed their climbing power as they pulled away on the first climb and managed to keep their 4-minute lead until the final 30km of the race when the two got pulled back into the main group.
Team Rabobank then took control of the final 15 kilometers as they managed to stave off the late attacks and deliver Freire to the finish line.
