Actor Patrick Dempsey and Pro Cycling star George Hincapie will be riding in the Breakaway Ride cycling events for charity in April of this year.
The ‘Breakaway Ride presented by Specialized’ cycling event is an accompanying event to the 2010 Amgen Tour of California, which will be held on May 16-23. This is a fundraising event which aims to support the Breakaway from Cancer® charity program of the California tour.
The events are open to the public, and cycling fans will get a chance to ride two actual routes that will be used by the pros on this year’s Amgen Tour of California. There are three distances planned for each event in order to accommodate riders of all levels.
The first ‘Breakaway Ride’ will be held on April 11 and will feature Patrick Dempsey, who is participating in the event to show support for the cause and showcase his personal enthusaism for cycling. Dempsey is an advocate for cancer support services and is the founder of the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Maine. The first ‘Breakaway’ event shall run through the same course that will be raced by the pros in stage 8 of the Amgen Tour of California.
The second ‘Breakaway’ shall be held on April 25 on the stage 2 route, and will feature pro-cycling star George Hincapie, who is also a supporter of the Breakaway from Cancer program. As Hincapie says, “I joined Breakaway from Cancer in 2005 because people need to know that education, resources and support are available as they fight the disease.”
