Organic Bikes Made From Bamboo

We all know that compared to driving a car around, riding a bicycle is more beneficial to our health, as well as the environment. Bicycles have enjoyed a reputation for being eco-friendly, and deservedly so. However, people so far have only focused on the environmental impact between driving a car or riding your bike.

This time around, the concept of being ‘eco-friendly’ is taken one step further with the development of organic bamboo bikes. Yes, folks, you read it correctly. The company that designs and builds these bamboo bikes is fittingly called Organic Bikes, and they have taken the idea of a ‘green’ bicycle a step beyond what the industry has currently offered.

According to their website, these organic bicycles are made by replacing most of the alloy tubing that is used for building other bicycles, and replacing it with bamboo. The company claims that aside from…

The Genesis Flyer

Genesis introduces its newest (and cheapest) member of their road bikes family — The Flyer. As you might expect from the name, this bike allows you to fly straight off from a dead stop, and can easily and quickly adjust to a change of pace or slope.

You won’t have to worry about getting a low-quality bike, though, because the Flyer packs quite a few punches when it comes to the important details. The looks and performance of this riding machine puts it at par with some of the better road racers out there.

The lightweight ride and handling is responsive, and with the double-butted tubing, fork, and tapered stays, you’ll be riding across uneven roads and bumpy tracks without feeling the bite. This also allows you to enjoy the “spring and float” feeling that steel-frame fans swear by, as compared to alloy-framed machines.

This give-and-take action from the rear…

UK Women Petition for Safer Roads

9,000 women in the United Kingdom have signed and delivered a petition to Transport Minister Sadiq Khan. Their request? Better safety conditions for cyclists on British roads.

The Motion for Women was launched last year in September, and the 9,000-strong signed petition was finally delivered this week to the House of Commons by cyclists Terry Cassels and Rachael Wood. Copies were also sent to the National Assemblies of Scotland and Wales.

The petition was born out of the results of a survey by Sustrans, a sustainable transport charity. The results showed that around 79% of the women in the United Kingdom never ride on bicycles. The number one reason for this, according to the survey, was that the women respondents “did not feel safe”.

Rachael Wood emphasized the necessity of removing this “fear factor” out of the equation, saying that this is critical to be able to encourage…

They could never hope to equal the elite riders of the sport, physically-wise, but Team Wiggle Tandem is hoping that the high-tech training and equipment available to them will be enough to earn them a long-distance cycling record or two.

David Harmon, the Eurosport cycling commentator, and wilderness guide Jez Hastings are embarking on a two-year mission to win a series of long distance cycling records, all in accordance with the Road Records Association rules.

Harmon says that even though they are both aware of the discrepancies between the past recordholders’ physical prowess and their own, still they are hoping that recent improvements in cycling technology will bring them a good chance of success in their record attempts.

Harmon and Hastings will ride the ‘Rocket 1′ tandem bike, designed and built by Terry Dolan. Using ‘Rocket 1′ will also let the pair assist in testing a set of developmental technology…

However, if you’re thinking…

The Cyclocross World Championships may be held on American soil for the first time ever — if things work out the way that the team behind the U.S. Gran Prix are hoping it would. Joan Hanscom, the USGP director, confirms that she and Bruce Fina (executive director of USGP) has submitted a bid to UCI to host the event for 2013.

USGP is currently waiting for the official decision from the UCI, but things are already looking bright for the American organization’s hosting bid, if comments from UCI ‘cross coordinator Peter van den Abelee are to be considered.

Abelee said in an interview with the Belgian press that Louisville is currently in the top position for hosting the prestigious event. Hanscom adds that the UCI has already done a site visit, and they are pretty much encouraged by Abelee’s words. This would be the first time that the ‘Cross…
