According to Spanish newspaper El Periodico, the 2014 Tour de France may begin in Barcelona, Spain. It is said that the city council is having “very advanced relations” ASO, the Tour organizer. The Tour usually starts outside of France every other year, with 2010 starting in Rotterdam, Netherlands, 2012 in Liege, Belgium, and 2013 starting in Corsica, a French Island close to Italy. The newspaper also says that Barcelona would hold a prologue and at least one other stage before going back to France….

Luxembourg cyclist Andy Schleck was involved in a collision with a car on Saturday, but luckily, he escaped without injury. Schleck posted on his Twitter that he is not seriously injured: “There was a car who did not see me and I could not avoid the crash. I think he has more damage on his car than me.” After being checked out, doctors confirm that Schleck has not broken bones or serious injuries. When the accident happened, Schleck was on his way to meet up his brother, Frank, for a training ride. A car, going about 35kph, came into Schleck’s path. “It was very cold and I decided to put on a lot of winter clothes. That also helped that nothing happened to me. World champion ‘cross rider Niels Albert, of Belgium, took the lead today of the Superprestige Cyclocross series. His lead came about after winning the sixth round, after going head to head with Zdenek Stybar. The two men broke apart from the pack in the mud-filled race in Diegem, Belgium. Kevin Pauwels took third. Sven Nys, series leader, struggled early on in the race, and was eventually withdrawn due to mechanical difficulties. American rider Jonathan Page took 15th. Albert took the lead of the series with 84 points, and behind him are Stybar with 81 points, and Nys with 71. The Superprestige series will continue with the next round on February 7th, 2010, in Zonhoven, Belgium.

German Marcus Burghardt, who spent his five pro years riding with Columbia-HTC and T-Mobile, is ready to begin 2010 with his new squad, BMC Racing. “I can tell how the time flies by, or shall I say, sprints by. They were good years, in which I learned a lot. There were highs and lows, as every athlete experiences,” he says on his Website, marcus-burghardt.com. He made his Tour de France debut in 2007, and also that year, he won Gent-Wavelgem. He experienced knee problems in 2006 and 2008, and 2009 was not that great for him either. Burghardt is looking forward to begin 2010 with BMC, and will meet with his trainer in Mallorca before going to team training camp in California. Cyclists in New York city are getting a new incentive to cycle to work, as a new law has come into effect. The law says that bicycles can be carried in freight elevators for workers in tower blocks, so they don’t have to leave their bike locked up down at the street. Employees can utilize this new law by calling for the implementation of a Bicycle Access Plan, which the company must follow unless they are exempt for certain reasons, such as there not being a freight lift, or safety hazards. This new law is part of the city’s efforts to get more people biking to work.
