31-year-old Spanish cyclist Xavier Tondo has signed with Cervelo for the 2010 season, joining five other Spaniards. Tondo has reportedly been linked to a deal with Astana, but Canadian-backed, Swiss-based Cervelo has confirmed Tondo’s signing. “It’s a dream come true. My principal goal for 2010 is to help Carlos Sastre in the mountains,” says Tondo. Tondo has a pretty impressive resume, winning the 2008 Tour of Portugul and the opening prologue of the Ruta del Sol. He was forced to withdraw from the Vuelta a Espana due to tendinitis. “We are pleased to sign Xavier because we are convinced that he can adapt perfectly to our team. Despite being 31, we are convinced that he can get even better. He had a great 2009 season, with six top-10s in weeklong stage races. He’s also very enthusiastic about how technology can be applied to the bikes, which will help us a lot in our develop of our products,” says Alex Sans Vega, sport director.
