When the temperature gets cold, your hands will be the first to feel it, especially if you’re cycling. Some heavy duty winter gloves like the Specialized Radiant Glove are insulated and fully waterproof, in low temperatures up to 32 degrees. The Specialized Radiant Gloves feature Thinsulate insulation to provide maximum warmth. The internal Hipora shell is responsible for keeping the water out. A brush microwipe thumb wipe helps you wipe away moisture from your face. The gloves have high grip palm material, which functions even when wet. Reflective piping is added for visibility. You can purchase the Specialized Radiant Glove at the Specialized online shop for $57….
The Copenhage Wheel is a prototype bicycle wheel designed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the famous MIT. It basically turns any bicycle into hybrid, self-powered bike. The wheel was unveiled in the Danish capital Copenhagen, coinciding with the UN conference on climate change. The wheel utilizes technology similar to that of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) used by Formula One cars. MIT’s SENSEable City Lab director Carlo Ratti explains how the wheel works: “When you brake, your kinetic energy is recuperated by an electric motor and then stored by batteries within the wheel, so that you can have it back when you need it. The bike wheel contains all you need so that no sensors or additional electronics need to be added to the frame and an existing bike can be retrofitted with the blink of en eye. In a…
Australian cyclist Stuart O’Grady had plans to return to racing next Sunday in the Stan Siejka Launceton International Classic, but it looks as if those plans will be put on hold due to pneumonia. “I spent Wednesday to Friday with a raging fever, incredibly painful headaches, some chest pain and a few other nasty symptoms. I decided it was time to go into the hospital and get the diagnosis. I spent all Friday at the Royal Adelaide getting checked out, tested and so on, still feeling extremely ordinary. They diagnosed me with bacterial pneumonia. I have quite a serious chest infection and started antibiotics immediately. They released me from hospital Friday afternoon, and have been told to take it easy for 7-10 days,” he said. O’Grady had health problems during a MotoGP event in Spain not too long ago, after going on a “hot lap”…
Mark Cavendish had a great season this year, winning six stages at the Tour de France. He says that his goals for the 2010 season will be the same as this season, which is to win as much as possible. “The green jersey will be my goal for next year. For sure, its a priority, but I am not going to sacrifice wins to sprint for points. At the end of the day, I should have won the jersey this year with the wins I had,” Cavendish told Velonews. Cavendish is currently finishing up team training camp in the Canary Islands of Spain. He said that the 2010 Tour route will be tough for him to win the green jersey. The last two weeks will feature a lot of climbs, which does not suit Cavendish very well. “Overall, its a harder…
Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin‘s hearing before the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee), which was scheduled for this past week, has been postponed due to scheduling conflicts. The new hearing date has yet to be announced. On the day of the hearing, Rebellin had an appointment with the Monaco Cycling Federation, where he rides under a license issued by them. He tested positive for the EPO derivative CERA last summer at the Beijing Olympics. Italian Danilo Di Luca has also tested positive for CERA, at this year’s Giro. The CONI has recommended a three-year ban for the Italian; “I feel calm and remain confident of being able to demonstrate my innocence at the appropriate time and place,” he says. Both cyclists retain their innocence….
Allan Davis has left team Quick Step after one and a half seasons with the Belgian team. Quick Step has not been able to offer Davis a new contract with the withdrawal of Specialized as one of the team’s sponsor. Davis’ leaving has been confirmed a day after Patrick Lefevere, the team manager, announced his interest in signing two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador for the 2011 season. “I held four spots open, one for Contador himself and for three of his close teammates. I won’t fill them until the opportunity presents itself,” Lefevere told Belgian newspaper Gazet van Anwerpen on Thursday. Davis has yet to announce a new team for 2010, but it is possible that he may go to his brother’s team, Fly V Australia. They plan to race the Tour de France in 2012….
Chad Thompson, Kenda Pro Cycling owner, has announced that they have signed Italian cyclist Luca Damiani to the team roster. “We were trying to see if we had the resources to do it. I knew his results, knew he was a brilliant rider but I wanted to see how he was as a teammate and with communication. I called around and he got gleaming reviews as a friend and a rider. I was surprised at how everyone felt about him,” Thompson said. “He had offers in Italy but he fell in love with the US style of racing and he wanted to be here. He will fit the mold of all the riders we’ve been hiring and that’s because he’s aggressive. He is an all-out rider that has sheer tenacity and attacks often. Having an aggressive riding style is our theory and motif for 2010, to…
