Italian junior time trial champion Anthony Orsani was tragically killed Sunday in an accident while he was out training in Vinci, Tuscany. He was only a week away from his 18th birthday when he lost his life. Orsani was struck by a car traveling in the opposite direction. He was conscious by the time help arrived, but died just an hour later at the hospital, according to tuttobiciweb.it. Orsani was training with five of his team mates, preparing for his first year in the under 23 ranks with his new team, Mastromarco.

Today, in Melbourne, Australia, Cadel Evans was named the 2009 Australian Cyclist of the Year at a ceremony. 32-year-old Evans is only the second man to win the Sir Hubert Opperman medal for the third time in the award’s 51-year history. Peter Besanko won the award in 1979, 1981, and 1984, while Evans won in 2006, 2007, and now, 2009. Evans was the first Australian to win the elite men’s road race, winning in Mendrisio, Switzerland.

Footon-Servetto has announced that they have added Portuguese national champion Manuel Cardoso to their 2010 roster. 26-year-old Cardoso was left without a team in August, as Liberty Seguros withdrew from cycling. He will now be able to continue his four-year pro career in the ProTour. Also joining Cardoso on the Footon-Servetto squad will be Spaniards Iban Mayoz and Vidal Celis.
