For a while, it seemed as if Astana was going to collapse due to financial instability. However, Kazakh officials have answered the call for help and have offered a guaranteed $22 million in backing to keep Astana up and running, at least for another year. This news comes just in time, as two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has just reached a tentative agreement to ride with Astana in 2010. “Samruk-Kazyna (state holding) has provided UCI with a guarantee of financial backing worth 15 million Euro($22 million) for this season,” says Nikolai Proskurin, Kazakh Cycling Federation deputy president.
